The photographs were taken in the garbage deposit area of Tirana, about half an hour drive from the city centre.
The waste of modern city poses poignant and delicate questions in regards to how the contemporary world interacts with its environment. This is an open dump where waste is continually burnt, a shanty city has also grown up around its edges. The intoxicating clouds of smoke prevent clear vistas and create ambiguous landscape that is etched with permanent haze.
I want these photographs to be beautiful, but also I want them to disclose very real aspects of the cities in which people live. The works are grounded in the present, and for me that present is very much about the future. (
